Training for the Nonprofit Leader - Virtual Edition

This series is an advanced approach to nonprofit management for middle-executive level professional.  The participant experience and interactive presentation, designed to broaden existing management skills which will improve the efficacy and efficiency of their role in their organization.  Presenters are experienced professionals in the nonprofit community and will apply extensive experience and knowledge to their virtual presenation, providing opportunities for thought-provoking dialogue as a large group, as well as small group breakout discussions.  There will also be time to share the advantages and struggles of working-from-home while maintaining a leadership role in your organization. 

This series is a more in-depth applied approach to the Temple University Harrisburg online Nonprofit Management Certificate.  Participants registered for any of the 10 online modules of the Nonprofit Management Certificate will be able to register for any one of these ECLS workshops at a discounted rate of $15.

Time:     8:30am – 10:00am
Location:  Virtual Live Workshop via Zoom

Cost:  $20 per workshop (or $15 per workshop, if already registered for a Nonprofit Management Certificate online module)

Cost includes 1.5 contact hours of social work continuing education.  


​​​​Workshop #1: Wednesday, June 3, 2020
Topic: "Implementing Principles of Nonprofit Governance”
Presenter: Joe Arthur, Executive Director, Central Pa Food Bank

Geared to current or prospective non-profit executives or board members with moderate experience, this workshop will provide an overview of governance in Pennsylvania charitable organizations. Participants will learn about non-profit governance principles, the importance of maintaining effective governance, and the roles of executive management and the board of directors in organization governance.

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Differentiate between the governance roles of management and the board of directors

  • Identify strong versus weak governance practices

  • Recommend governance enhancements


Workshop #2: Wednesday, July 29, 2020
Title: “Developing an Effective Strategic Plan”
Presenter: Mary Quinn, CEO, YWCA of Greater Harrisburg

Strategic plans are not difficult, but it’s not something most of us are taught or inherently know how to do. As a result, they can be tricky, and sometimes daunting.  Have no fear! This workshop will engage and encourage you to challenge your current views of how your organization currently operates.  There will be time for an overview of best practices, and then all attendees can openly discuss failures, successes, and provide contructive criticism in an effort to better each other’s organization.  

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Identify your organizations SWOT’s and create an action plan to address them

  • Establish SMART objectives for your organization:  How, When, Where & Why

  • Differentiate the types and uses of a multi-year strategic plan, an annual business strategic plan, and a development (fundraising) strategic plan and identifying what will work best for your organization


Workshop #3: Wednesday, September 9, 2020
Title:   “Why should I join this organization?  Why should I stay?”
Presenter:  Jennifer Allison, VP of Human Resources, Keystone Human Services

Every nonprofit organization has an important mission.  Without attracting and retaining the right employees, the mission cannot be fully realized and implemented.  This presentation outlines the contributors to creating a culture which attracts and retains that talent.

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Utilize your role to foster a healthy work culture

  • Establish consistency and successful processes for your organization

  • Explain the importance of communications, measurements, compliance and strategy and successfully implement these into your daily functions


Workshop #4: Wednesday, November 4, 2020
Topic: “Maximizing Your Brand and Community Engagement”
Presenter: Steve Schwartz, Director of Development, Christian Churches United of the Tri-County Area

Nonprofits with effective communications understand the importance of building internal and external trust and support, vital for achieving the organization’s mission and goals.  This workshop will touch on all areas of marketing and communications for a nonprofit and help tailor an individual plan for your organization.

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Evaluate and build your organizational brand/identity

  • Integrate new communication channels to diversify your reach

  • Strategize your objectives in order to achieve your organizational goals
